Harm Reduction Programs

Harm reduction refers to policies, programs and practices that aims at minimizing the negative health, social and legal impacts and harmful effects related to drug use, drug policies and drug laws.

Harm reduction is pegged on justice and human rights for people with drug use disorders. Harm reduction normally put more efforts on transformative positive change on working with people without judgement, compulsion, discrimination while providing precondition support.

Under these critical considerations, Reachout Centre Trust is providing harm reduction services to people with drug use disorders. The main objective being reducing the effects of drug use and HIV/AIDS through hotspot-based outreaches.

 People with drug use disorders suffer a myriad of challenges especially when seeking treatment in public health systems, these challenges are directly linked to stigma, discrimination and inadequate capacity within the facility to handle their basic and unique needs.

'The Peer Led’ - Model

Reachout Centre Trust Interventions

Reachout Centre Trust is providing HIV prevention interventions, HIV testing, referral and linkage to care targeting people with drug use disorders. We are implementing ‘The peer led’ model where our Peer educators and Outreach workers visit hotspots areas and provide comprehensive HIV services. This also involves our qualified health service providers who provide the much-needed health care to people with drug use disorders in our scope (Mombasa, parts of Kwale, Voi in Taita Taveta and Lamu) counties.

Harm Reduction Services

Reachout Centre Trust services under Harm Reduction program includes, but not limited to;
Provision of clean needle and syringes through the (NSP) program and providing guidelines on safe use and disposal, overdose prevention and management services.
HIV testing services and condom distribution, Sexual reproductive health services, Referral for HIV treatment services and Antiretroviral therapy (ART)
Harm reduction aspects also focuses on social well-being of people with drugs use disorders; by providing them with Hygiene package as well as nutritional support.
Provision of targeted information, Education and communication materials on HIV, STI, TB and Viral Hepatitis and referrals screening, diagnosis and treatment.
