Training on Harm Reduction for Kenya Prisons Welfare Officers

Reachout Center Trust recently partnered with the Kenya Prisons Service Coast Region to conduct a three-day training for Prisons Welfare Officers from various stations across the Coast. Held at the Bostal Institute in Mombasa County, the training focused on strengthening support for harm reduction programs within the prison system. The initiative aimed to raise awareness among officers about effective strategies to address drug-related health challenges and promote rehabilitation.

Harm reduction is a public health approach designed to minimize the negative consequences of drug use, such as the transmission of HIV, hepatitis, and the risk of overdoses. The training emphasized the importance of these strategies within the prison context, where inmates may be at higher risk for such health issues. Officers were introduced to practical harm reduction tools and interventions that could be implemented in their daily work to improve health outcomes for inmates.

An additional key focus of the training was mental health awareness, recognizing the strong link between substance use and mental health disorders. Inmates in prison often face heightened vulnerability to both, and the training aimed to equip officers with the knowledge to identify mental health concerns, respond with empathy, and provide appropriate care. This holistic approach ensures that harm reduction efforts also address underlying psychological challenges.

Through this partnership, Reachout Center Trust and the Kenya Prisons Service are committed to improving the overall well-being of inmates by creating a supportive and rehabilitative environment. By continuing to invest in training and education, both organizations aim to ensure better health outcomes, reduce harm, and promote recovery for those in the prison system across Kenya.
