INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING 26THJUNE, 2014

INTRODUCTION


By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. This resolution recommended further action with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year’s theme is ‘A MESSAGE OF HOPE: DRUG USE DISORDERS ARE PREVENTABLE AND TREATABLE.’


Kenya Harm Reduction Network (KHRN) organized this year’s activity and invited other stakeholders, Mombasa County officialsand the community to commemorate this day. The event began with a procession from Tononoka Ground to MakadaraGround which was official flagged off by his honourable Mr.AbdulswamadShariff Nassir who is the Member of Parliament (MP) of Mvita Constituency. The official ceremony was conducted at Makadara grounds where various dignitaries and the community were treated to entertainment, testimonies from both active and recovering drug users and speeches from Mombasa County government officials.

OBJECTIVES:


• To commemorate the International Day against Drug abuse and illicit trafficking
• To sensitize the community and strengthen our commitment in the fight against drugs

OUTCOME:


• The guests included: Honorable the MP of Mvita, Mr. AbdulswamadShariff Nassir, The Deputy County Commissioner of Mombasa County, NACC, CIPK Representatives, who all had an opportunity to address the community on issues of drugs and substance abuse and how the Mombasa County has been affected.
• Performances from different youth groups and schools were in line with the theme.
• The emphasis of the day from the different leaders was condemning drug trafficking at various parts of Mombasa County and the urge the police department to ensure effective policing towards drug traffickers and also called up the courts to impose harsh penalties for such offences. They also appreciated the work done by Kenya Harm Reduction Network towards their efforts in harm reduction as well as Rehabilitation.
• The leaders vowed to keep on pushing and advocating for a conducive environment for harm reduction through various strategies, such as

:

o Monitoring, in terms of ensuring drug peddlers and traffickers won’t go free, once arrested, hence they will get intensive minimum sentence.

o To support Kenya Harm Reduction Network to provide harm reduction services to PWUDs and PWIDs within Mombasa County.

During IDADA 2014, even the People with Disability participated in the procession to create awareness on harm reduction and drug abuse.

Students, Mombasa County residents participated in huge numbers during the procession from Tononoka grounds to Makadara grounds.
